Reason #58 why New Jersey is better than New York
Shellac is dissolved in ethanol as a solvent. There are a number of ways you can get ethanol for this purpose. One is to get denatured alcohol from the local home center. The problem with this stuff is that methanol is commonly added as the denaturing agent. Methanol is highly toxic, and can be metabolized to form formaldehyde and then formic acid if ingested. A second is to get anhydrous denatured ethanol from Tools for Working Wood. From all reports, this stuff works really well.
A third option is Everclear. 95% ethanol, no denaturing ingredients, and readily available at your local liquor store. Except if you live in New York. You can’t buy Everclear in New York. But you can in New Jersey. I picked this up at the Buy Rite in Milltown.

And as you can tell, this is the good stuff, not the 151 proof Everclear that you’re stuck with in many other states.

I have an order of seed lac on the way. This will be fun to see how this works.
